AR Rahman's Biography
book lover, book review

Book Review – A.R. Rahman: The Musical Storm

It’s a dull day. I’m not particularly interested in anything. I decide to play some songs to help me cheer up.

And then Dil hain chota sa.. choti si aasha.. plays!

Immediately I’m transported to a different world..

A. R. Rahman- the musical storm is nothing short of a magician. His works have touched millions and continue to mesmerise us everyday.

I rarely read biographies- I prefer autobiographies. This book particularly interested me purely because I was curious to read about A. R. Rahman.

The author- Kamini Mathai has crafted a masterpiece through several interviews of A.R. Rahman and his close associates. Her research is extensive. Writing is easy to follow and you just flow through the pages. A few repetitive themes does make the book a bit stretchy; but you can forgive the author for making a point.

The book starts off with the story of R K Shekhar, his success story, his downfall and eventually the family’s.
The author then piques reader’s interest with slowly building Rahman’s story with quotes from people who his works closely. I expected the book to be an all A. R Rahman praise book. But Mathai doesn’t fall for such delusions. She has also brought light to Rahman’s infamous vices.

As a reader, I felt as if I’m slowly decoding the reticent music director. His life, philosophy and actions are laid down in front of me in simple yet powerful words.

As I finish the book, I feel a void- I want to know more about A.R Rahman. That’s how good the book is.

The facts laid out in the book may not be unknown to hard-core A.R Rahman fans but it’s definitely interesting for music lovers and A. R Rahman admirers like me.

I asked my followers on Twitter about their favourite A. R Rahman songs!
